The CEO-Dictator Playbook
Musk's attack on the United States government is strategic and systematic.
How Elon Musk dominates Trump and undermines his Strict Father credibility
As Donald Trump sits for yet another joint interview with Acting President Elon Musk, FrameLab contributor Jason Sattler (also known as LOLGOP on social media) examines how this bizarre power arrangement could weaken Trump's "Strict Father" credibility. Jason's writing has appeared in USA TODAY, Wired.com, the New York Daily News and Alternet.
Donald Trump's first presidency was built on a declaration: "I alone can fix it." He positioned himself as America's sole savior, the ultimate strict father figure who would build walls, drain swamps, and rescue the nation through sheer force of will.
That image has drastically shifted in his second term. Now, Trump finds himself in an unprecedented supporting role to Elon Musk. The unelected billionaire dominates every aspect of the federal government, injecting his influence into department after department while broadcasting his moves around the clock on X. Their dynamic violates the core conservative principle of hierarchical authority—the strict father framework that helped Trump rise to power.
This is a coordinated assault on democracy and a betrayal of the United States Constitution. And there's no question who the real president is. The Trump Show has become the Elon Musk Show, with Trump increasingly relegated to a supporting role in his own administration. Musk aggressively usurps the spotlight Trump once owned exclusively.
Elon is everywhere—in every executive branch department, on X at all hours, propagandizing about his efforts, and looming over Trump in the Oval Office. This unprecedented power dynamic raises troubling questions about who truly leads our nation.
Is it a hostage situation? A coup by elder abuse? Or has American politics shifted so dramatically that we're now ruled by bantering billionaires who operate in tandem, united by their shared love of firing public servants who make $50,000 a year protecting our water as these corrupt men plunder ten times that every hour?
This situation should present a fundamental crisis in conservative moral reasoning. Traditional strict father morality requires big, strong Republican men to declare their subordination to Trump as their father figure. This worldview demands absolute obedience and allows no challenge to authority. As Dr. George Lakoff has shown, this moral hierarchy explains almost everything about the Republican Party, including their obsession with punishing those on lower rungs and the twisted alliance between the GOP's fundamentalist base and tech authoritarians.
But if Elon is running the show, who is the real daddy? A central premise of Strict Father thinking is that there can only be one ruler in each house, country, or moral universe. Trump used to command attention by merely entering a room. Now, he needs dual interviews with Musk to capture public interest. What kind of strict father figure willingly surrenders his power as a more ambitious man steals it?
Two scenarios emerge, both deeply troubling for conservative moral order: Either Trump is simply a puppet under the control of a billionaire puppet master, or he has willingly delegated the presidency to a foreign-born billionaire – who is legally ineligible for the job – so that he can play golf and post on social media all day.
Neither scenario aligns with conservative values or American democratic principles. To expose this corruption and restore proper democratic order, we must:
The Trump-Musk relationship seems unlikely to fray naturally. Musk's power transcends mere political influence. He's among history's wealthiest humans, with an unchecked desire to procreate, dominate perceived enemies, and shape global affairs that far exceeds even Trump's ambitions. Their interests align in their hostility to democracy, their weaponization of antipathy toward "racial equity," their sympathy for fascism, and their disdain for taxes and laws.
This unholy political alliance represents an existential threat to democracy. In 2025, a foreign-born billionaire has simply purchased the presidency in an effort to create an unprecedented concentration of power that undermines our democratic foundations. However, both Musk and Trump must confront declining poll numbers that suggest an opportunity to accelerate their political demise.
Democrats cannot afford to wait for the disaster to worsen. They must frame this billionaire takeover now as the source of coming horrors. The Trump-Musk dynamic provides a perfect target for exposing the corruption of both conservative values and democratic principles. Every time Trump defers to Musk instead of leading, we can highlight both the betrayal of conservative principles and the weakness of this unusual power-sharing arrangement.
This strategy may not break their alliance, but it could unite Americans against this tech-enabled assault on democracy, preserving our democratic promises for America's 250th birthday and beyond.
